I want to share with you a little knowledge about aphantasia that I learned on my journey to find a cure. Aphantasia is not just a lack of visualization, but it can also affect other senses such as sound and touch. For me personally, I cannot hear music in my head, which can be frustrating when trying to remember a tune or composing a piece of music.
However, I have recently discovered a technique that has helped unlock my musical creativity: improvisation. Instead of relying on my mind’s ear to hear the music, I use my hands to create the sounds directly. By playing around on a piano or guitar without worrying about how it sounds, I am able to uncover new melodies and chord progressions that I never would have thought of before.
This technique might not work for everyone, but the lesson here is that there are alternative ways of accessing creativity. Just because we cannot access one sense doesn’t mean we can’t tap into our imagination in other ways. It’s all about experimenting and finding what works for us.
So my advice to anyone with aphantasia or any other condition that limits their creativity is to keep exploring and trying new things. Don’t give up on your passions just because they don’t come naturally to you – there are always alternative ways to express yourself. With a little bit of experimentation and a lot of determination, anything is possible!
