If you’re like me and you have aphantasia, you know that visualization isn’t really your forte. But fear not! There are still ways to improve this skill, even if you can’t quite “see” things in your mind’s eye.
One exercise that has worked for me is trying to associate colors and shapes with objects. For example, when I think of an apple, I mentally picture a red circle. By doing this repeatedly, I am able to train my brain to start associating these images with real objects.
Another technique is using memory aids or mnemonics. Using these methods can help you to remember visual information, as you are associating it with something memorable, like a song or a silly phrase.
And don’t forget about supplements and vitamins! While they may not be a cure-all, certain supplements like magnesium and zinc have been shown to potentially aid in visualization abilities.
So take advantage of your downtime and give visualization a shot! Even if you can only conjure up a color or a shape, consider it progress. And who knows, with enough practice, you may just surprise yourself with what you can “see” in your mind. Happy visualizing!
